Deeper Roots Spiritual Direction & Formation
Deeper Roots is a ministry of Hessel Park Church that seeks to help others deepen their walk with God as they serve God on the campus and in the community. We provide individual and group spiritual direction, and periodic classes and individualized retreats on contemplative Christian practices. Deeper Roots is ecumenical in practice and respects the traditions of the individuals it serves.
Spiritual Direction is a contemplative practice of prayerfully reflecting upon your life before God as you seek to deepen your relationship with God. A Spiritual Director is a spiritual friend and companion who prayerfully walks with you as you open yourself to God’s presence and discern God’s movement in your life.
What happens in Spiritual Direction?
Individual sessions are usually one hour, once per month. They begin and often include times of silence and contemplative prayer in order to become open to the Holy Spirit. After sharing what has been put on your heart, you and your director listen and discern together how God is present in the situation and what his invitation may be.
Why Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual Direction is for those who want to grow spiritually and discern God’s presence and guidance in their lives. People who seek spiritual direction may be feeling restless with their current spiritual practices, uneasy with a current life situation, have questions about their vocation, or experiencing loss. Topics include anything that significantly touches on your relationship with God.
Group Spiritual Direction
In group direction members take turns presenting. The rest of the group helps the presenter explore God’s presence and leading in his or her life. The number of presenters per meeting will depend on the size of the group and the length of the meeting. The spiritual director serves as the facilitator of the group by maintaining the focus on and demonstrating the practice of spiritual direction.
